One of the essential functions of a Scout District is to support the Groups and District Sections which operate within it. In Cabot we have a number of teams and volunteers in place to help support Sections to run safe and exciting programmes.
Activities
We all want our programmes to be exciting and adventurous but it’s important they’re safe as well – all volunteers running activities are responsible for ensuring that they do so according to Scouting rules.
For activities which require specific skills or where there is a greater risk to young people (known as Adventurous Activities) volunteers must demonstrate their skills, experience, and personal suitability to lead these activities through the Activity Permit Scheme, and must properly notify the District when these activities are taking place using the Activity Notification system.
Nights Away
Taking young people away on Nights Away events is a key part of Scouting – they’re something every young person should get to experience.
Our Nights Away Advisors, part of the District Programme Team, advise on Nights Away activities and support volunteers to gain Nights Away Permits, demonstrating they have the skills and experience to take young people away on these events.
The Programme Team are also responsible for checking Nights Away activities are being run in line with Scouting rules and for approving Nights Away Notifications which must be submitted before any Nights Away activity can take place.
First Response Training
All Scouting activites require a volunteer with appropriate First Aid training to be present, and it’s expected that all volunteers who work directly with young people will complete this training and keep it up to date.
The District organises First Response courses throughout the year to support volunteers to complete this training. Our District First Response Trainer can also advise on whether training a volunteer has done outside Scouting meets the First Response requirements, and record this on the Scout membership system.
Staying safe and Safeguarding
All adult volunteers have a responsibility to make sure we deliver Scouting in a safe way and protect young people from harm.
Following rules and policy
